Changes are needed at Surfers Corner carpark due to the damage it has repeatedly suffered from high seas and storms.
We have been working with members of the community to determine the final design of the carpark area at Surfers Corner, and to make sure enough parking remains for people using the beach.
We have recently heard concerns about the new proposed carpark on the corner of Lyall Parade and Cochrane Street, so we are checking back in with the community on this aspect of the project.
Construction of a new carpark was planned to begin in early 2018. This would be where informal car parking has occurred in the past, and has been designed to leave as much green open space as possible. There would also be a new zebra crossing to ensure safe access the beach.
We would build this carpark before removing the damaged part of the current Surfers Corner carpark and reinstating a dune in this area. The shower won’t be moved and the rest of the carpark will be resealed and tidied up, with a footpath and new access ways built. This work will begin at the end of summer 2018.

There are a few options as to how this project may progress:
- Option 1 is to continue with the carpark as currently proposed (26 parking spaces).
- Option 2 is to reduce the size of the proposed carpark (14 parking spaces).
- Option 3 is to have no new carpark, which would also mean the removal of the proposed pedestrian crossing and the crossing islands across Cochrane Street.
