We would like to congratulate Jordan Barnes for becoming the new artist in residence at the Lyall Bay Gallery.
He started his residency in March when the previous artist in residence (Catherine Roberts) finished her 6 months at the end of February 2011, As of the end of April there appears to be very little activity going on in the building as to when it would open to the public for viewing of Mr Barnes work.
There was still signage out of the front of the building advertising the opening times up to this morning but this has now been taken down.
We are now almost 2 months into the residency and it is a shame that the building has not been open to the public.
Indications are that the building would open from Monday to Friday.
Also Art Show New Zealand's own web page shows that the 6 monthly residency is due to start from March 2011.(Click on Link Below)
One must not forget Jordan’s own web page which indicates that his 6 month residency is due to start in March. Click on link below
We would be grateful if those concerned would state in public what in-fact is going on and is the Gallery in-fact open to the public or not.
Below is an email sent by Carla at Art Show New Zealand in reply to questions asked.
I will look into this today. Yes, the gallery space should be open Mon to
Fri. Jordan has only been a resident at the gallery since March - he was,
however, awarded the grant in November. Prior to that the space was open
consistently.
I must apologise about this being misleading - I will get back to you as
soon as I speak with the artist. Ultimately this is my responsibility - so
thank you for informing me of the below.
But than looking at the Gallery facebook page one finds this ..
Maranui Gallery:Hi there Isabel. No, as part of Jordans NZAAT Artist Grant, Jordan receives the gallery as his studio space for 6 months to work on an exhibition he will hold at this years NZ Art show in July. The Gallery will then open to the public again in September.
Looking through the window in the Gallery today it is good to see art is taking place and looking at the wipe marks on the window we have not been the only one who has been wondering what has been taking place in here.
Please feel free to make your own conclusions as at the moment one would have to say there is more confusion than anything else.
One must also keep in-mind that the Gallery Building is in-fact a public, council owned building.
