Policing New Years Celebrations - Wellington City

Wellington Police had a relatively quiet start to the New Years celebrations with revelers enjoying themselves in the city area says Wellington City (Acting) Area Commander Inspector Soni Malaulau.

The weather obviously played a big part in dampening New Year celebrations with two major planned events cancelled due to bad weather conditions.

The majorities of revelers in the city were good natured and welcomed in the New Year with friends and relatives and basically enjoyed themselves having a good time in the City.

Wellington Police maintained a high visibility focus in the City and had a strong presence in the Courtney Place entertainment area with increased foot patrols and visits to liquor licensing premises.

Police made 35 arrests overnight mainly for minor drunk and disorderly offences

The emphasis was on High Visibility Policing within the City area and ensuring that those that had obviously had too much to drink were provided with advice and means to get home. It was pleasing also to see that many groups visiting the City had designated sober drivers and individuals together actively looking after each other.

Lyall bay: Care needed after Moa Point overflow discharge.

Updated 01Jan2012 (Original Post 15 May 2011)

Once again after heavy rains of which we have had over the last few days it is wise to be careful when out and about the bay for the next few days due to Moa Point overflow.

This is something that happens after most heavy rains and normaly takes a couple of days to clear it is likely teasting will be done today to see what the affects have been of the rains.

Posted on Wellington City Council web site 31/12

Swimmers and surfers are warned to stay out of the water in Lyall Bay following an overflow at the Moa Point sewage treatment plant today. The overflow has been caused by today's heavy and persistent rainfalls.

The inflow into Moa Point has been boosted by large volumes of stormwater today - and this has exceeded the facility's treatment capacity. As a result, heavily-diluted and partially-treated sewage is being pumped out of the outfall pipe that stretches 1.8 kilometres into Cook Strait.

Temporary warning signs have been erected at Lyall Bay to warn people about possible health risks. The Council has also alerted Regional Public Health.

While the volumes of sewage entering the sea are relatively small, people are advised to exercise caution and stay out of the water until testing of water samples establishes that water quality is at safe levels.

Samples have been taken today and the results will likely be available on Monday.

Swimmers and surfers are advised that, in general, it is wise to stay out of the harbour and coastal waters around urban areas for at least 48 hours after heavy rainfall. This is due to the 'cocktail' of contaminants that can be washed into the sea in stormwater from city streets and other sources.

Note the photos in this post are after a big rain of last year and the below text we will try and update photos and details latter today..

-----------

After the heavy rains of this morning, one has to note that the discharge sign towards maranui is down where as and I am suprised the one near the playground is still up.

These signs are normally only found down when after a heavy rain the wastewater system of the bay may struggle to contain the outflow into the bay.

Please feel free to add in the comments if you have more information.
